Driving in Dubai: Salik Tolls, Speed Limits and Parking Rules (2026 Guide)

• 5 min read • Need Rent a Car Editorial Team

Driving in Dubai is widely recognized as one of the smoothest, most enjoyable automotive experiences in the world. Highways feature 6 to 8 lanes per direction, clear bilingual signage, and high-quality asphalt. However, to avoid unexpected traffic fines, every tourist and expat must master three key systems: Salik toll gates, radar speed thresholds, and paid parking zones.

1. Salik Toll Gates: Official 5 AED Billing

Dubai utilizes an automated RFID toll collection network called Salik. There are no physical toll barriers, booths, or cash lanes. As your vehicle passes beneath an overhead metal arch along major expressways (such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Maktoum Bridge, or Airport Tunnel), high-speed scanners read the RFID tag on your windshield.

  • Official Cost: 5 AED per gate crossing (4 AED standard RTA rate + 1 AED administrative processing in UAE rentals).
  • Zero Surcharge Guarantee at Need Rent a Car: We deduct Salik crossings strictly at the official 5 AED rate from your deposit. You never pay arbitrary agency surcharges.
  • Toll Tracking: Every crossing timestamp is synchronized with official RTA logs, which are provided upon request.

2. Speed Limits and Fixed Radar Cameras

Roads in Dubai and the UAE are strictly monitored by state-of-the-art radar cameras positioned every 1–2 kilometers:

  • Speed Buffer Rule: In the Emirate of Dubai, there is a +20 km/h buffer over the posted limit. If the speed sign displays 100 km/h, the speed camera flashes at 121 km/h. (Note: This buffer does not apply in the neighboring Emirate of Abu Dhabi, where the posted speed is the absolute limit).
  • Urban Streets: 60–80 km/h (cameras flash at 81–101 km/h in Dubai).
  • Major Highways (E11 Sheikh Zayed Rd, E311, E611): 100–120 km/h (cameras flash at 121–141 km/h).
  • Tailgating & Lane Discipline: Maintain a minimum 3-second distance. Lane discipline is strictly enforced by overhead cameras, especially on overtaking lanes.

3. Paid Parking in Dubai (RTA Zones)

Parking in commercial districts, Dubai Marina, Downtown, and Deira is managed by the RTA:

  • Payment Methods: You can pay via SMS (format: <PlateCode> <PlateNumber> <ZoneCode> <Hours> to 7275), the official RTA app, or Apple Pay at smart parking kiosks.
  • Parking Hours: Typically paid Monday through Saturday from 08:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Sundays are generally free in most public zones (except special event areas).

By keeping to speed limits and parking legally, your Dubai road trip will be completely stress-free. If you ever have a question about a route or zone, our 24/7 WhatsApp concierge is always available.
